What began as a hot, uneventful Father’s Day afternoon, members of the local Simi VFW were hard at work at Post 10049 in a long anticipated remodeling project, but things quickly turned into an emergency response situation as two vehicles collided just outside on Los Angeles Avenue at approximately 1:15pm Sunday.
“There wasn’t a second thought. We heard the crash and just ran out to help. Its what we we’re trained to do. Thanks to Simi PD, Fire and EMS for their quick response time”, said Mary Bandini, VFW Post Quartermaster, City Counsel Candidate, and 11 year Simi Resident.
A woman in a black BMW was struck on Los Angeles Avenue as she pulled out in front of a white truck headed westbound outside of PC’s Bar & Grill and the VFW on Los Angeles Avenue and Buyer Street. Wayne Write (Post Commander) and Marc Lawrence rushed to aid a semi conscious man in the white truck while Mary Bandini summoned paramedics. Marc assessed the man before helping him out of the vehicle, aiding him to a seat and the cool air conditioning of PC’s until medics arrived.
“He was very disoriented. I immediately suspected a head injury so I continued to ask him questions, ‘what’s your name, do you know where you are?’…” explained Mr. Lawrence, “I knew this guy was in shock, and then he went into a full asthma attack. I asked him if he had an inhaler and then yelled to Mary to grab it out of his truck.”
Simi PD, followed by Ventura County Fire EMT units promptly arrived and transported the man by Ambulance to Simi Adventist Hospital. Simi 360 has no information regarding injuries to the driver of the BMW whose condition is unknown, but presumed okay. Quick thinking Simi Veterans won the day.
